Costa Rei, Sardinia: An Introduction

Costa Rei lies on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, a stretch of shoreline known for its long, pale sandy beach and clear water. The resort area falls within the municipality of Muravera, in the province of South Sardinia, and sits roughly 60 kilometres east of Cagliari, the island’s capital.

The beach itself runs for several kilometres, backed in places by low dunes and Mediterranean scrub. It is a popular choice for families, with shallow water near the shore and a range of facilities along the seafront during the summer months.

Villa Monica di Costa Rei

Villa Monica is a holiday home set within the Costa Rei area. Properties of this kind typically offer self-catering accommodation with private outdoor space, and are used as a base for exploring the beaches and inland villages of south-eastern Sardinia.

Getting There

Cagliari Elmas Airport is the main point of arrival for the region, with car hire available at the airport and in Cagliari itself. The drive to Costa Rei takes in the coastal road heading east, passing through towns such as Villasimius.

Around the Area

Inland from Costa Rei, the landscape rises towards the Sarrabus hills, with walking routes and small towns such as Muravera and San Vito. Boat trips depart from several points along this coast, and the marine protected area around Villasimius is within easy reach by car.

When to Go

The season runs from late spring through early autumn, with the warmest and busiest period falling in July and August. May, June, September and October tend to be quieter, with milder temperatures and lower prices.

Practical Notes

A car is useful for reaching beaches, shops and restaurants outside the main resort. Distances between coastal settlements can be longer than they appear on a map, and parking near popular beaches fills early in high season.
