Costa Rei, Sardinia: A Coastal Base for Independent Travellers

Costa Rei sits on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, within the municipality of Muravera, roughly an hour’s drive east of Cagliari. The resort was developed from the 1960s onwards and is now one of the island’s better-known seaside destinations, popular with Italian families and, increasingly, with visitors from elsewhere in Europe.

The Beach

The centrepiece is the beach itself: a long stretch of fine, pale sand backed by low dunes and a fringe of juniper and pine. The water shelves gently, which suits families with young children, and the bay is sheltered enough for swimming well into the autumn. Behind the beach, the terrain rises into granite hills dotted with Mediterranean scrub.

When to Go

July and August are hot and busy, with the highest room rates and the fullest restaurants. June and September are generally the most comfortable months for walking and sightseeing, with sea temperatures still warm enough for swimming. Spring brings wildflowers to the surrounding hills; winter is quiet, and many seasonal businesses close.

Getting There and Around

Cagliari Elmas Airport is the nearest major arrival point, with a transfer time of around an hour by car. A hire car is more or less essential if you want to explore beyond the resort, since public transport along this stretch of coast is limited. Villasimius, with its marina and marine protected area, lies a short drive south, while the interior villages of the Sarrabus region offer a different side of the island.

Practical Notes

  • Distances along the coast are short, but roads can be slow in high season.
  • Several beaches in the area are protected, with restrictions on anchoring and access at certain times.
  • Local restaurants tend to open late in the evening; booking ahead is sensible in peak weeks.

Details of individual properties, prices and availability change from season to season, so it is worth checking current information before planning a trip.
