Costa Rei: Sardinia’s South-Eastern Beach Coast

Costa Rei lies on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, within the municipality of Muravera, roughly 70 kilometres east of Cagliari. The resort sits at the heart of the Costa Rei coastline, a stretch of several kilometres backed by low hills and Mediterranean scrub.

The Beach

The main beach is a long, wide sweep of fine, pale sand that shelves gently into shallow water, making it a comfortable choice for families with young children. Granite outcrops and small rocky coves interrupt the sand at intervals along the coast, and the water is typically clear and turquoise in calm weather.

Scoglio di Peppino

One of the best-known landmarks on this stretch of coast is the Scoglio di Peppino, a reddish granite rock standing just off the beach. It takes its name from a local fisherman and is a popular subject for photographs, particularly at sunset.

Nearby Coves and Beaches

A short distance to the north, Cala Sinzias offers a quieter alternative, with a curving bay and a backdrop of pine and juniper. Further north again lies Cala Pira, watched over by a Spanish watchtower, and Villasimius, with its marine protected area and several beaches of its own. South of Costa Rei, the coast runs towards Capo Ferrato and the small resort of Porto Pirastu.

When to Go

The season runs from late spring to early autumn. July and August are the busiest and warmest months, when the resort fills with Italian and northern European visitors. June and September are quieter and generally milder, while the sea remains warm enough for swimming into October.

Getting There

Cagliari Elmas Airport is the nearest airport, around an hour’s drive away. From there, the route follows the SS125 and then the SP18 towards Muravera and the coast. A car is useful for exploring the surrounding beaches, the Sarrabus hills and the towns of the south-east.

Practical Notes

Facilities in Costa Rei are concentrated around the resort centre, with shops, restaurants and cafés within walking distance of the main beach. Parking near the beach fills quickly in high season, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable. The coastal road linking Costa Rei with Villasimius makes an easy half-day excursion.
