Alghero sits on the north-west coast of Sardinia, a Catalan-influenced town of honey-coloured ramparts, narrow lanes and a sea that shifts from turquoise to deep blue within a few paces. Just outside the centre, away from the busiest stretches of shoreline, Villa Grachira offers bed and breakfast accommodation for travellers who want the town within reach but prefer to return somewhere calm at the end of the day.

Alghero and the Surrounding Coast

The town itself rewards wandering. The old centre, enclosed by sea walls, is best seen on foot: the cathedral, the church of San Francesco and the many small piazzas filled with cafes. In the evening, the passeggiata along the Bastioni brings locals and visitors together against the backdrop of the sea.

Beyond Alghero, the coastline towards Capo Caccia is one of the most striking in Sardinia. The promontory rises sharply above the water, and the sea caves at Neptune’s Grotto can be reached by boat or by a long flight of steps cut into the cliff. Inland, the Nuraghe di Palmavera and the tombs of Anghelu Ruju give a sense of the island’s much older history.

For beach days, the sands at Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto are a short drive from town, while the long sweep at Maria Pia is closer still and popular with families.

Practical Notes

Alghero is served by its own airport, roughly twenty minutes from the centre by car. The town makes a good base for exploring the north-west of the island, including Bosa to the south and the vineyards around Sella e Mosca. A car is useful if you plan to visit the beaches and archaeological sites at your own pace, though the historic centre itself is best explored without one.
